Work From Home Jobs for People with a Disability

Many people who have a disability actually don’t want to be on social security disability. Most people have a strong desire to provide for their families even when they are disabled. As someone with an epilepsy diagnosis, I know this firsthand. It can be difficult to accomodate a disability in the work workplace. Working from home is ideal because you don’t have to worry about your health issues flairing up and disrupting the workplace. For me, I enjoy working from home and do a temporary job so that I can interact with people, but don’t have the stress of working on days when my health takes a downturn.

For people who face a disability, work from home jobs offer more flexibility. You are able to make your own accomodations in order to complete the tasks and you have flexibility with your time. With the invention of the internet, there is an abundance of work from home jobs for people with a disability. All you have to do is get a little bit creative in your job search and you will discover that there is almost something for everyone!

First and foremost, you will want to look at your talents, skills and what you enjoy doing. I tried out a number of work from home jobs before I found one that fit my personality, lifestyle and preferences. You don’t want to make the mistake that I did at first and select something based on a recommendation from someone who has analyzed your neuropsychological evaluation. They recommended that I go into medical billing because it was repetitive and routine and didn’t require me to engage my weak auditory processing skills. That was a big mistake. I disliked all things doctors and just couldn’t get excited about medical billing. However, for some people it is the ideal work from home job. It pays well and is stead work.

Next, you’ll want to figure out a schedule that is realistic for you and your lifestyle. Are you a morning person? Do you work best in the afternoons and evenings? Some work from home jobs do require early morning hours, but are completely doable. For example, there is a need for people who know English to teach English online to kids in China. If you love to be up at the crack of dawn and have an engaging personality with kids, you could make a living as an English as a Second Language teacher.

Ideas for work from home jobs for people with disabilities:

  • Online tutoring

  • Job coach
  • Accountant
  • Telesales representative
  • Telemarketer
  • English Language Teacher
  • Tutor
  • Music teacher for private lessons
  • Massage therapist
  • Medical biller

I’ve tried my hand at a few of these jobs and discovered that affiliate marketer was my favorite. While I had some success with life insurance telesales, at the end of the day, I hated talking on the phone. If you love chatting with people and can become a phone pro, telesales may be the right position for you. There are still lots of companies that use telemarketers to set appointments for sales too. However, I love reading and writing. I love the aspect of creating content. The great thing about affiliate marketing is the longer you do it, the more content you have online and the more money you end up making.

Affiliate marketing is a great way to create a passive income stream as well. Your content lives on the internet and will continually sell to people who are reading it. I know this a new site and you are learning. Don’t let this be totally targeted to the disabled. There are unemployed persons that need this also, everyone needs to get off their proverbial butt in any situation to make things better. All you need to concentrate on is offering the methods for all people to use and create a living for themselves.

    Hello Melinda
Thanks so much for sharing this post on jobs people can do from home if they have disability.
The working world is hard for able-bodied people and it can be harder for people with disability, what with traffic to mention but just one.
People with disabilities can now work from home and increase their income without leaving the house.
The internet has opened many doors that few years ago were not there and anyone can now make money doing different things, blogging, freelancing.
You mention online tutoring, dou you happen to know any places one can register to be a tutor?or how does one find students to tutor?
Affiliate marketing is another brilliant way of making money online and one does not have to deal with clients, refunds or shipping and it cost nothing to get started.
I feel disability is now an ability(in the internet world) as all you need is the internet and the will to work hard at what you do.
    Thanks so much for sharing.

Yes, there are a few companies that one can apply to be a tutor. VIPkid is an English tutoring online job that you can apply for. Tutor.com is another site. They usually find students for you and take a cut of your pay. If you are willing to do your own marketing and find your own students, you can probably tutor over skype and find students through networking. Googling online tutoring jobs can help you locate more companies to work for. Thanks for the comment.
