There are many ways to market products and sell online. The fastest way is to pay for an advertisement on Google or Facebook and target your audience. However, if you are strapped for cash, you are not going to have the money to test out different keyword strategies. If you have more time than cash, you will want to learn how to sell online free using keyword research and search engine optimization. You can post advertisements for products on Backpage or Craigslist, but then you have to have the physical product and be willing to ship it to the consumer or deliver it to them. That can be time consuming. I’m going to talk a bit about a free form of affiliate marketing.
Search engine optimization leverages the power of the search engines to discover what people are looking for online. Once you know what they are looking for, you can connect them to products that will suit their needs. Matching people with products is what sales is all about.
For example, if you know that people are looking for information on gardening, you can start a gardening blog. With some keyword research, you would discover what people are googling to read about in the gardening niche. You would write a blog post or an article on it. You would then look for a product that may go along with the article that could be useful to a gardener and add a link to it at the bottom of the article. When someone clicks on the link and purchases the gardening tool, you receive a commission.
The key to having success at using search engine optimization to drive traffic to your content and affiliate links is that you need to know whether there is a good chance that you’ll be on the first page of google, so that someone will actually click on your blog or website and then be interested enough in your link. To do this, you are going to want to research the keywords. Jaaxy is a great keyword research tool that allows you a few searches before you have to start paying for them. Google Adwords also has a research tool that you can use. Wealthy affiliate has a research tool that can guide you to those coveted keywords that will draw people into your website.
For this blog post, I used the keywords, “how to sell online free.” The traffic was over 100 per month and the competition was under 100. As my website gets larger, I should be able to rank this page for “how to sell online free.” Don’t stop with only one keyword though. You will want to rank for many keywords and drive a lot of traffic to your website. Keep in mind that if 100 people visit your website during the month, only a handful of them will actually follow through and click on your affiliate link and then even fewer will buy from you. However, if you write an article a day that drives 50 people a month to your website, at the end of the month, you’ll consistently have 1,500 people going to your site. As you build it out more and share it more on social media, that number will grow and your chances of making sales everyday increases.
Initially, you should be looking for what are called long tail keywords. You want to be specific in order to reduce the competition and match what the people are looking for online.
Once you have your keywords, you are going to want to stuff them into your title and also into the blog post or article. Be careful! Overstuffing keywords in your article can be a red flag to Google and they won’t rank you. You will want to write naturally and the keywords should be interspersed throughout the article.
In addition to having keywords in your article, you are going to want to provide good information. You want the reader to gain information from your article and trust you as a good source of knowledge. You want to spark their interest in the affiliate product that you are connecting them to and to click on the link so they buy the product and you make a sale.
Finally, have end the article or blog post with action keywords, like “click here” or “buy this product.” Double click on this link to learn more. Directing the reader to take action helps them to take that next step of clicking on your affiliate link.

Yes, it is extremely necessary to get ranked in Google. If you have awesome content, but there is a lot of competition and your competitors are definitely using keyword research, you will be ranked, but most likely on one of the last pages unless you have plenty of backlinks pointing to your website and lots of comments and engagement on your site. Google also needs to know what to rank your site for. The keywords help with that.
Keyword research is going to be a bit different if you are paying for advertisements.
